A family business at the heart of Newry since 1957
McCartan Bros began in 1957, when Gervase McCartan persuaded his brother Dominic to return home from America and join him in opening a menswear shop on Sugar Island.
More than six decades later, the business remains in the same family. Dominic’s son Paul now runs McCartan Bros alongside his wife Sharon, with their son Conor representing the third generation behind the counter. The wider family continues to play an important role too, with Paul McKibben leading our wedding-hire department.
What began with two brothers has grown into a family tradition built on quality, knowledge and genuine personal service.

For generations, customers have visited McCartan Bros for tailoring, suits, casualwear, footwear and accessories, as well as wedding and formal hire.
Our collections are carefully selected from leading menswear brands, but the service you receive is just as important as the clothing itself.

Built on resilience
Our story has also included difficult chapters.
In October 2023, severe flooding caused the Newry Canal to burst its banks, leaving our Sugar Island shop under approximately three feet of water. Stock was destroyed, the premises were badly damaged and the family worked to save whatever stock could be carried upstairs.
The support of the Newry community helped us move forward. Within two weeks, McCartan Bros reopened from a temporary unit in The Quays Shopping Centre while the Sugar Island shop was rebuilt.
We later returned to our original home, stronger and more determined than ever to continue serving the community that had supported us.
